Blepharoplasty is the removal operation of oil bags and saging excess skins on upper and lower eyelids. As the age progresses, wrinkles and sags on the skin of the eyelids and bagging around the eyeball occur due to herniation of the adipose tissues that surround and support the eye. This creates a tired and old expression in the person.Blepharoplasty surgery removes excess skin from the caps and provides skin tension. Depending on individual's problem, the herniation of the adipose tissues is restored either by stretching via putting stiches or by removing some of these fat bags.

 

The incision on the upper eyelid is made 7-8 mm above the lashes so that the upper eyelid is folded. Excess skin is removed. The herniated fat tissues are removed. The incision on the lower lid is made 1-2 mm below the lashes. The most important development in eyelid surgery in recent years is, instead of removing the herniated fat tissue in the lower eyelid, fixing the hernia under the eyeball with stitches, thus filling the groove in the eye and eliminating the hernia. For the people who have only bagging and do not have wrinkles and skin excess, without any external incisions, it is possible to fix baggings with incisions applied to the inner face of the eyelid. (Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty) Since this method is performed without an external incision, bruise and recovery period is shorter.

 

Blepharoplasty is an easily tolerated procedure when performed under local anesthesia. Therefore, we prefer to perform this operation under local anesthesia. However, it can be done under general anesthesia in case of request of the patient or any other operations. The operation lasts about 1 hour for both eyelids. The patient can return home immediately after surgery. Stitches are removed within 5-6 days. Although the majority of the swelling around the eye disappears within 3-5 days, its complete disappearance and the final result can take 2 -3 months. Patients usually return to their daily life within a few days. Since the skin of the eyelids is very thin, the marks resulting from the eyelid aesthetics remain very thin and not noticeable after a few months.
